Ubisoft Teases Far Cry Announcement? [UPDATED]

[Update – Ubisoft confirmed that its social media posting was a "throwback post” and not a tease.]

Ubisoft posts what appears to tease a Far Cry announcement on social media. Fans have been eager to play another game in the franchise ever since the last game in the series, Far Cry Primal, released to mixed reviews in 2016.

On its official Facebook page, Ubisoft France posted a piece of promotional artwork for Far Cry 3, the open-world first person shooter it released in 2012 to critical acclaim. The image was published along with a caption, in French, that translates to “an island that has never really left” according to Facebook’s built-in translation service.

This post by the company may just be a positive throwback. Far Cry 3 is one of the most well-liked games in Ubisoft’s entire publishing library and was so successful that it also spawned a standalone expansion called Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. But most Far Cry fans aren’t taking it as such and have their fingers crossed that Ubisoft is teasing a Far Cry 3 remaster that would bring the game to PS4 and Xbox One, as it was only initially released on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Fans have also suggested that Ubisoft is teasing a Far Cry 5 as a prequel focusing on Far Cry 3‘s infamous villain Vaas Montenegro.

Revisiting the Far Cry 3 island is a bit of a risk for Ubisoft, given that the company was slammed for being unoriginal with Far Cry Primal. Primal actually reused the Far Cry 4 map and some players accused Ubisoft of just making a prehistoric reskin of Far Cry 4, also calling the game a Stone Age mod of its predecessor. So if the company does opt to revisit a previous series location it will have to think of some original and new gameplay concepts to go along with it.

At this point it’s unclear when Ubisoft plans to lift the lid on its Far Cry project – assuming that one really is in the works – but E3 2017 seems like a safe bet for a full reveal. The company is also expected to announce its much rumored Mario and Raving Rabbids crossover for the Nintendo Switch during the annual industry bash, so it sounds as though Ubisoft is about to show up in a big way come the event in June.

The most recent entry in the Far Cry franchise is Far Cry Primal, which is available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
